New It Make !
Exploring Free Culture.
New It Make is about exploring the freedom of digital creativity. The advancement in computer technology has made producing, distributing, and promoting creative work possible for everyone. It's never been easier to copy and share our work and it's only going to get easier. When we create a work of art, we own that work, we automatically assume the copyright on it and control how that work is used. While lawmakers and publishing companies work to make copyright even more restrictive and extend its length, we can also use copyright code to waive some rights to make sharing and collaboration easier. It's called the Creative Commons and it's a tool we can use when we don't want to impose all the restrictions that come with traditional "All Rights Reserved" copyright.
Using a Creative Commons license allows us to retain some rights, but not dedicate the work completely into the public domain, where all uses of the material are permitted for any purpose.
In this show we are going to listen to music and other recordings available in the "commons", which includes the public domain. We will talk to people who are using the Creative Commons licenses and discuss issues surrounding copyright. We will highlight resources available to us, websites, books and things like Free/Open Source Software that are part of this wider field of "Free Culture". Our mission is to support local artists and community members in the Waikato who are interested in accessing, using and contributing to the Creative Commons and remixing Free Culture.
